History

The Antico Monastero of  Santa Maria inter Angelos was built in 1229 as a convent for a group of Clarisse nuns, coming from S. Damiano in Assisi, the order founded by Saint Clare of Assisi. The nuns lived in the convent for about two centuries.

In the 13th century, the artist known as Maestro delle Palazze, a follower of Cimabue and considered a forerunner of Giotto, was committed to paint the cycle of frescoes representing life and death of Christ. Remains of the frescoes are still visible in our meeting room.

The frescoes have been detached from the Monastery from 1921 and are now visible in these museums:

-  Museo Nazionale del Ducato di Spoleto, Spoleto (Annunciation, Nativity, Last Supper, Crucifixion, Doomsday, Holy Mary with St. Francis and St. Clare)

-  Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MS (Last Supper, Crucifixion, fragment of peinful Virgin and St. Longino, St. Joseph)

-  Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MS (The Swaddled Christ Child – fragment of Nativity)

-  Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MS (Shepherd – fragment of Nativity)

-  Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT (Wise Man – fragment of Nativity)

-  Glencairn Museum, Bryn Athin, PA (Annunciation, Doomsday)
