Known as the ‘green heart of Italy, the region of Umbria is one of the finest holiday destinations, not only in Italy but also in the whole of Europe. Umbria is a land of spectacular pristine, largely rural landscapes, rolling wooded hills, mountains, valleys and of course sublime art and architecture.

Only a 2- hour drive from Rome and just 8 kilometres from Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, is the enchanting hillside town of Spello. Quiet and elegant with excellent restaurants famed for typical robust Umbrian cuisine, fine wines and of course historic buildings Spello is the ideal base from which to discover and explore this extraordinary part of Italy.

Within easy reach are the famous hill towns of Orvieto, (with its legendary cathedral) Todi, Citta di Castello, Gubbio, Spoleto and the highly praised wine producing region of Montefalco. For those who are adventurous, outdoor activities abound.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPERTY

Villa Giulia was formerly a simple stone house on the edge of Spello's town walls. The space has been redesigned and restored in a fresh contemporary style.

Rosemary, sage, verbena, thyme and lavender scent the air. The atmosphere encourages complete relax. The greatest luxury is the lush private garden with a pool and a wonderful view on the Umbrian hills.

The owner has created for her guests the home-away-from-home that experienced travelers expect. She has decorated it in her favourite palette and with items found on her travels.

Cooking, living and dining

A light and airy open space; practical and unfussy but pretty and perfectly furnished. On the right, the kitchen and dining area (table for 6-8); to the left a comfortable sofa with old linen and beautiful pillows opposite a flat screen television concealed behind an antique door. The floors are a soft grey resin and the accent colour is green. Chic, cheerful and modern.

The Red Room

The master bedroom is situated on the first floor with a wonderful view on the garden and the Umbrian hills. The colours of the Moroccan rug rhyme with the red king size bed from Minotti, and the curtains are made from fine Indian cotton. Ensuite bathroom: modern, simple, chic with double shower, bidet and WC.

Blue Room

A bedroom set on the garden level. The spirit of the Aeolian islands echoes in the deep blues and the rich textiles, paired with cool white walls and an old cotto floor. King size bed Ghost from Gervasoni. Ensuite bathroom with double shower and antique marble sink. Beautiful view on the garden.

Yellow Room

From the garden, walk down the broad stone staircase into this oasis: a bedroom furnished with a king size bed from Flou and charming bedside tables from Gervasoni. The yellows and greens dialogue with souvenirs found in Laos, Cambodia and Burma. Within the room is a fully equipped shower room. Being able to step out of bed and into the garden is a real treat.

GARDEN AND POOL

Umbria has an excellent climate. Lounging in the open, resting and reading or dining, is one of our greatest holiday pleasures, especially after a long day exploring the region. The house provides the perfect setting. I designed and planted the garden to allow plenty of space to lie in the sun as it moves from east to west, or to recline in the shade on a day bed piled with soft pillows, or to spend the evenings enjoying local salami, ham and cheese with a glass of Umbrian wine, around the old table and chairs which the owners bought in the region's flea markets. The private pool (6×3 m / 19×10 ft) provide extra comfort in the hottest months and is unique inside the historic centre of a town. The breathtaking view overlooks the Chiona valley. Traffic and noise are distant memories; your eyes see nothing of the modern world - only the Italian landscape at its very best.

The Pool is open from 26th April to 18th October 2025

NON PEAK SEASON BOOKINGS, April and October

Villa Giulia is also a good option in the low season. This is when the cities gets less crowded, temperatures are lower but still around 15/25 degrees Celsius in the central hours of the day. Autumn is a very colourful season and the light is beautiful. In October there is the hand-picking of olives and grapes, while in spring the region enjoys warm temperatures and a beautiful flowering of fruit trees and poppies.
